Seven months ago, it was hard to envisage Novak Djokovic losing a Grand Slam match against a low profile player ! .Since winning the French Open last year, Novak has looked like a shadow of his former self and his early exit in the last couple of tournaments have ended any hope that he may have held of regaining the world No 1 spot before the clay court season. So Can Djokovic regain his world number one spot again ?
Over the last few years, Novak Djokovic’s domination of men’s tennis could hardly have been more complete. By winning the French Open, which had eluded him for so long, the 29-year-old Serb became the first man since Rod Laver to hold all four Grand Slam titles at the same time and generated a good lead of 8,035 points over Andy Murray at the top of the world rankings. But every great ere has its unique end ! And the performances of Novak in past few months have been quite disappointing to say the least.
Djokovic lost to Sam Querrey in the third round at Wimbledon, to Juan Martin del Potro in the first round of the Olympics, to Roberto Bautista Agut and Marin Cilic in successive Masters Series tournament. Not a great reading if you are a Djokovic fan.
After seeing Federer make his fantastic comeback, Novak can also generate his hopes of becoming number one again. To be honest, Murray is not at his best currently, and has a lot of points to do defend especially in the grass court season, whereas Novak does not have as many to defend.
If Novak can defend his French Open title, and Murray does not win as many tournaments as last year, then there is a way back for Djokovic. To regain his number one spot, Novak has to defend his French open title, as well as Madrid and Toronto and go further in tournaments such as Monte Carlo, Shanghai, and Paris. He must win the US Open and the world tour finals to have any hope as well.
There is a work left for Novak to do to get back to the summit of world tennis again. But he certainly has the skill and talent required to do just that. So Can Djokovic regain his world number one spot again ? It is a probability rather than a possibility but don’t write off the Serb just yet.
