World Carrom Championship

The World Carrom Championships are held once every four years. This year’s edition was the largest ever with a record 15 participating countries. Like every edition, this year’s favorites were USA, Italy, Germany and Canada.

The Indian contingent was considered a promising one with the likes of S.Apoorwa, Kajol Kuamari, Parmila Devi and Tuba Shehar forming the Womens team. The Indian team comprised of Sandeep Deorukkhar, Royaz Akbar Ali, Prashant More and RM Shankara.

Indian Womens Team

In what was a first, S. Apoorwa and Kajol Kumari beat their Indian counterparts Parmila Devi and Tuba Shehar in the Women’s doubles event.

These two also got India into the finals of the team championship where the Indian contingent consisting of S. Apoorwa, Parmila Devi, Kajol Kumari and Tuba Shehar beat their Sri Lankan opponents 3-0.

This was also a second victory for S. Apoorwa at the Championships after her double’s triumph on Wednesday.

Indian Mens Team

The Indian Male members finished second as they failed to get the better of their Sri Lankan opponents in the final of the team championship. The eventual score of 1-2 was a true reflection of how closely fought the match ended up.

India won the doubles final event as the team of Sandeep Deorukkhar and Riyaz Akbar Ali beat their fellow Indian counterparts Prashant More and RM Shankara.

Sri Lanka was the surprise package of the tournament with both their Mens and Womens team performing way beyond their expectations. (Women’s Team Wins Gold at the World Carrom Championships!)
