While MS Dhoni is widely acclaimed as the greatest captain that India ever had, one should not forget the contribution of Saurav Ganguly to Indian cricket. Ganguly was the one who instilled self belief in the squad, which was then taken over by Dhoni. Ganguly’s aggressive style of captaincy was a refreshing change, as the outlook of the Indian team changed dramatically in the early 2000s. And now, former India pacer, RP Singh believes that Virat Kohli is very similar to Saurav Ganguly.

Ganguly became India’s captain just as the cricket team was coming out of a very difficult phase. Several high profile members of the Indian team were caught in a match fixing scandal, which turned the fans against the team.

But Ganguly, along with the likes of Tendulkar, Dravid, Laxman and Kumble helped change the fortunes of Indian cricket. After the 2011 world cup win, Kapil Dev lauded the efforts of Saurav Ganguly, as he claimed that Ganguly was the one who changed the face of Indian cricket.

And now RP Singh, claims that Kohli is very similar to Ganguly in his approach to captaincy.

“We get to see a lot of Sourav Ganguly in Virat Kohli with the aggression and the energy that they bring.”

“Rahul Dravid and Virat Kohli are totally opposite. Dravid is much more calm and comes to the game with tactics and plans. Kohli makes plans but does change it according to the situation of the game.”

That is high praise indeed, as Kohli will now have the added pressure of living up to the standards set by the great Ganguly. Having to follow MS Dhoni was bad enough !
