Europe’s greatest competition UEFA Champions League could be moved to weekends.
UEFA Champions League have always been held on weekdays, instead of weekends. However, that event could be changed at the Dugout Chairmen Elliot Richardson has quoted that the action could be seen in the weekends, and the talks are very well underway in Europe’s footballing body.
This move will see the League games move to the weekdays, instead of weekdays. The timings of the games could also be altered to make life easier for American and Asian fans who have been watching the games regularly.
Plenty of rules were tweaked following the last season, including the implementation of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) which will be available from Quarterfinal stages. Besides, the addition of the fourth substitute in case if the games go down to the wire into the extra time, an extra substitute can be made.
The new rule also saw that a single player will be able to represent two clubs in a single campaign. During the last year, Philippe Coutinho was not able to feature for the La Liga outfit, having already played for Liverpool in the group stages.
The Champions League has always kicked off at 7:45 PM BST but the rule from this season saw it getting changed to 5:55 PM or 8 PM – similar to how Europa League functions.
All four teams from England, Spain, Germany and Italy have directly progressed to the Champions League group stages this term, making life very tough for the teams from other countries very complicated to get into the same stage.
However, the rule which reads the Champions League and Europa League winners will automatically qualify for the next season’s competition stays.
There were plenty of surprises in the Group stages of the Champions League including CSKA Moscow 3-0 thrashing the reigning Champions Real Madrid at Santiago Bernabeu, and Red Star Belgrade who made their first Champions League appearance since 1992 has beaten Liverpool 2-0 in Serbia.
The draws were made after the completion of the Champions League and Europa League during last December. Arguably, the clash between Manchester United and Paris Saint-German, Liverpool and Bayern Munich are the most awaited ties.
With a potential change of rules by shifting the game to the weekends, there is no doubt that there would be plenty of viewers across the world, but the league viewers will fall down drastically.
