"Inter already have a handshake with Wijnaldum”: Liverpool Midfielder Closing In On Serie A Switch

Inter Milan have fallen out of the race for the midfielder

With contract talks between Liverpool and Georginio Wijnaldum failing to reach a fruitful conclusion, the Premier League side was resigned to losing the player’s services.

Despite crooning plaudits his way as Wijnaldum emerged as a crucial figure for the club in its injury crisis, Klopp failed to convince the player to sign an extension at the club. With both Inter Milan and Barcelona wooing him, Wijnaldum decided it was best for him to switch to greener pastures.

While he was touted to always move to Barcelona with countryman Ronald Koeman extremely eager to bring him to the club, Wijnaldum was said to being enticed by Inter Milan as well. However, the Serie A giants have decided to pull out of the race citing wage issues to leave the ground clear for Barcelona.

Wijnaldum On The Cusp Of Barcelona Transfer

And the La Liga side looks to be finally wrapping up business between the two parties. As per reports emanating from England, Wijnaldum has gone onto sign a pre-contract agreement with Barcelona, one which all but affirms the news of his impending transfer.

Players who are in the last six months of their contract are free to indulge in negotiations with other clubs. They are also allowed to sign contracts akin to the one Wijnaldum has put pen to paper to in a bid to seal their future.

While Wijnaldum’s weekly wages are bound to leave an already cash strapped Barcelona in a pickle, the club was swayed towards his transfer owing to the midfielder being available on a free.

Wijnaldum has featured in the third most number of matches for Liverpool this term. His ability to remain fit at a time when the club has been knackered and fraught with injuries has seen the player go onto captain the club in three of his last four outings for the team

The Netherlands player will next be featuring for Turkey, Latvia and Gibraltar as his country veers up to make a foray into its FIFA 2022 World Cup qualifiers. Liverpool meanwhile have been accorded a much needed three week break.
