Gio Reyna’s Voted USA Soccer’s Young Player Of The Year: The Borussia Dortmund player was serenaded with the honour owing to his pathbreaking season in the Bundesliga

Finally making a mark on the global stage, Gio Reyna has been lauded and recognised back in his own country as well. Showcasing his credentials on the global stage after impressing for Borussia Dortmund, Gio Reyne has been received USA’s accolade of their Young Soccer Player of the Year for 2020.

Reyna who is currently spearheading Borussia Dortmund’s attack with his counterparts dwindling in form was accorded his debut for USA back in November. The 18 year old had featured during the club’s 0-0 draw with Wales with him only going from strength to strength in the Bundesliga since.

And he’s been rightfully acclaimed as USA Soccer’s young player of the year with Reyna ending up with a staggering 79% of the votes. Gio Reyna has played 13 Bundesliga matches in the 2020-21, a period which has seen him net 3 goals and assist on 4 occasions.

Reyna’s tally overall stands at 5 goals and 7 assists in 2020 across the course of 39 outings. Reyna follows in the wake of Christian Pulisic and Weston McKennie who were recipients of the award across the last couple of years.

Gio Reyna had begun his career with New York City before subsequently being snared by Borussia Dortmund owing to his searing speed and ability to traverse his way past tight spaces.

Weston McKennie Wins Male Player Of The Year Award

Juventus’ Weston McKennie has meanwhile been handed over USA Soccer’s Male Player of the Year for 2020.

McKennie, 22, received 44% of  the votes with Chelsea’s Christian Pulisic (27%) coming in at second and Barcelona’s Sergino Dest (14%) completing the top 3.

Naomi Girma Wins Young Female Player Of The Year

The USA U20 women’s team captain, Naomi Girma was meanwhile conferred with the country’s Young Female Player of the Year plaudit. Girma had helped guide her side to the regional title after routing Mexico 4-1 in the summit clash along with ensuing a berth for her country at the FIFA Women’s U20 World Cup 2020.

“It’s been such a crazy year, but it’s always an honour to represent the USA and I’m proud of what our team was able to accomplish at the beginning of the year in Concacaf qualifying even though the World Cup got cancelled,” said Girma.

“While the year didn’t go as planned, I’m especially thankful for the coaches and the medical staff who helped keep us playing some soccer and to be mentioned along with the past winners is very cool and humbling. “
