KXIP take decision on new captain after Ashwin agrees to join Delhi Capitals

KXIP are most likely to hand over the responsibility to KL Rahul following Ravichandran Ashwin’s departure.

Kings XI Punjab have released their Skipper Ravichandran Ashwin from the squad. The bowler has been underwhelming upon taking over the captaincy over the last two seasons, helping them finish 7th and 6th respectively. For his poor record, Ashwin received unceasing criticisms despite possessing one of the strongest squads in the league.

Hailing from Chennai, Ashwin was an integral part of the setup under MS Dhoni, which went on to win two titles with him. Making himself available for the auction, Kings XI Punjab bid 7.6 crores rupees and retained him for the 2019 squad as well. Since his mankading moment was also one of the standout controversies in the history of this tournament, the side based from Punjab have released him.

Ashwin is likely to take part in the eleventh edition next year. But, he is likely to represent Delhi Capitals this time. Currently co-owned by GMR and JSW, they put their faith in the young Shreyas Iyer, who guided them to the 3rd place finish in the league stages before eventually bowing out in the last four of the competition.

It is unlikely to see Ravi Ashwin taking over the captaincy responsibility yet again, but his presence will strengthen their spin department. With Amit Mishra, Axar Patel, Jalaj Saxena, Sandeep Lamchhane already at the disposal, an experienced campaigner like Ashwin will take their bowling department to another level.

Kings XI Punjab has plenty of experience in their squad, owning the likes of Chris Gayle and David Miller. The opener stayed as West Indies captaincy for a long time, while David Miller has experience managing Punjab. Out of six games as the Skipper, Miller has a petty record with just one win.

Henceforth, KL Rahul is likely to be announced as the next Kings XI Punjab’s Skipper for the upcoming season. The opener has come across run feast over the last two seasons – making himself as a strong contender to take over the side.
