Manchester United have reportedly sprung into action on the transfer deadline day, as the club has contacted Atletico Madrid over Diego Godin.

Premier League heavyweights, Manchester United, have made contact with Atletico Madrid over a possible transfer of defender Diego Godin, according to Sky Sports.

The Red Devils have been long in pursuit of an established name in defense, but have not signed one yet as the deadline day has arrived. And with less than 24 hours remaining till the end of the deadline, Sky sources reveal that the Red Devils have made a surprising contact to Atletico Madrid for signing their club captain.

Manchester United had been linked with various defenders throughout the transfer window, with the likes of Harry Maguire, Jerome Boateng and Toby Alderweireld all being eyed by the Old Trafford outfit. However, none of the deals are likely to be completed, with manager Jose Mourinho also not confident that the club will be able to land a centre-back this window.

However, if reports from Sky Sports are to be believed, Manchester United are still pushing for a move, and have made the Uruguayan international their priority on deadline day.

Nevertheless, Atletico Madrid are highly unlikely to listen to any offers for Godin, however, it will be interesting to see if United can come with a huge offer to bring the Uruguay international to Old Trafford.

The 32-year-old had a good World Cup this past summer in Russia, leading Uruguay to the quarter-finals, where they lost to the eventual World Cup winners, France.

Godin has already played eight seasons for Atletico Madrid, winning various domestic trophies while also winning the Europa League and reaching the Champions League final twice.

However, with less than 24 hours remaining in the end of the Premier League transfer window, Manchester United will have to put their foot on the accelerator and hope a deal is pulled off.

If the Red Devils pull of this deal, it will not be less than a miracle, with the experience and defensive attributes of Diego Godin being a huge plus for Jose Mourinho’s squad.
