Trey Lance had another stellar pro day yesterday as he put on a show in front of teams, most importantly the San Francisco 49ers. As Lance prepares to be one of the first QB’s picked in the upcoming draft, Lance spoke up on his idols growing up.

Trey Lance was stellar at NDSU in college. His one season of FCS football was enough to prove that he was one of the best QB’s in an already stacked QB class of 2021. Being a projected lock to go in the top 10, Lance will be seen at the NFL draft in Cleveland on April 29th.

Earlier this week, Lance sat down with ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit to discuss which players he modelled his game after growing up. It turns out one of the two players Lance idolized wasn’t even a quarterback.

Trey Lance said his idols growing up were Adrian Peterson and Tim Tebow.

“Growing up, Adrian Peterson was like my guy,” Lance said. “Obviously, I was a running back at the time. Then, it was Tim Tebow. I was a huge Tim Tebow guy. Tim Tebow was still my guy. Read all his books. Still to this day a huge fan of him as a football player and a person as well. My dad was actually a Florida State fan, so naturally, I had to become a Gator fan.”

What is very interesting is that neither players conventionally resemble how Trey Lance plays the game. But Lance has some qualities about the two that show why they are his idols. Adrian Peterson is arguably one of the best RB’s in NFL history. And Tim Tebow may not have panned out in the pros but he was always a threat with his legs.

Similarly, Trey Lance has elite rushing ability for a QB. On his way to an undefeated season, Lance had 169 carries for 1,100 yards and 14 touchdowns. But what separated his from QB’s like Tebow is that he is much more accurate and can’t stretch the field as he threatens defences. He completed 66.9 percent of his passes in 2019 for 2,786 yards, 28 touchdowns and zero interceptions.

The first 2 picks in the draft look set, with Clemson B Trevor Lawrence going to the Jags and BYU QB Zack Wilson to the Jets. Trey Lance will be one of the 3 quarterbacks, including Mac Jones and Justin Fields, vying be drafted third. The 49ers sit at No.3 and will be a great situation for any young QB to go to.

Trey Lance is definitely an elite talent. But his critics have questions as he played only one full season in college in 2019. But with another stellar pro day, Lance looks to have silenced his critics, at least for now. Where Lance lands will be one of the biggest stories to watch out for come draft day.
