The Champions League action in the group stages ended on Wednesday this week, with a rather dramatic finish for the final three berths in contention.

Liverpool beat Napoli in a narrow 1-0 win, while Tottenham held Barca to a 1-1 draw to end Inter Milan’s campaign. The Group H saw stunning results as Young Boys beat a full-strength Juventus side 2-1, and Valencia overcame Mourinho’s United with the same scoreline.

The draw for the next round takes place on Monday next week. But what are the Champions League round of 16 draw rules?

Here’s a detailed look:

Champions League round of 16 draw rules:

The draw takes place on December 17 this year. Here’s how it will pan out:

  • The seeded team (first in their respective groups) will take on the unseeded team. (second in their respective groups)
  • The teams from the same groups, and same associations cannot play against each other.
  • The above restrictions will no longer be imposed in the draws for quarterfinals and semifinals.

Champions League round of 16 draw rules: First placed sides

  • Borussia Dortmund: The side’s strong start in the league was reflected in their Champions League performances, as the side finished first in the group with teams like Atletico Madrid and AS Monaco.
  • Barcelona: The side was undefeated in their group, despite drawing with quality sides like Tottenham and Inter Milan.
  • Paris Saint Germain: In arguably the toughest group in the tournament, the French champions topped over Liverpool and Napoli. The side started their campaign with a loss at Anfield, but recovered quickly as they were undefeated in the rest of their games.
  • FC Porto: Like Barcelona, the Portuguese side finished the group unbeaten, scoring the highest points in group stages of all the teams. (16)
  • Bayern Munich: The German side qualified for the round-of-16 with 14 points, winning four games.
  • Manchester City: The side was troubled by the second-placed Lyon in both the legs, but registered convincing victories in the rest of their games.
  • Real Madrid: The defending champions of the tournament made a shaky start to their campaign, much like their La Liga season. Yet, Real secured the berth in the next round of the tournament, but suffered a huge 3-0 loss against CSKA Moscow.
  • Juventus: The Italian side conceded a loss in their final game against Young Boys, but luckily for them, United also dropped points at Valencia.

Champions League round of 16 draw rules: Second placed sides:

  • Atletico Madrid: The Spanish side were on par with Dortmund with their performances, but finished second on head-to-head calculations.
  • Tottenham: The final place in the next round from Group B was in contention in the last game-week of the tournament, and Tottenham held their nerves to tie Barcelona down to a draw.
  • Liverpool: Jurgen Klopp’s side registered a narrow 1-0 victory over Napoli in the potential knock-out game on the final match-day of the group stages.
  • Schalke 04: The side will go as an underdog in the round of 16, and were knocked out of round-of-16 in their last three attempts.
  • Ajax: The Dutch side performed impressively in their group stage games, holding Bayern to a draw at Allianz Arena. This is their first appearance in the premier European competition in four years.
  • Lyon: The French team won only one game in their group, at the Etihad Stadium against Manchester City. However, there were also undefeated in the group, drawing the rest of their matches.
  • Roma: Roma reached the semifinals of the tournament last season, but lost three games in the group stages this year.
  • Manchester United: The English side registered a shock 2-1 win over Juventus in Turin, but squandered their chance to finish at the top after conceding a loss at Valencia.
