- The seeded team (first in their respective groups) will take on the unseeded team. (second in their respective groups)
- The teams from the same groups, and same associations cannot play against each other.
- The above restrictions will no longer be imposed in the draws for quarterfinals and semifinals.

- Borussia Dortmund: The side’s strong start in the league was reflected in their Champions League performances, as the side finished first in the group with teams like Atletico Madrid and AS Monaco.
- Barcelona: The side was undefeated in their group, despite drawing with quality sides like Tottenham and Inter Milan.

Champions League round of 16 draw rules: Second placed sides:
- Atletico Madrid: The Spanish side were on par with Dortmund with their performances, but finished second on head-to-head calculations.
- Tottenham: The final place in the next round from Group B was in contention in the last game-week of the tournament, and Tottenham held their nerves to tie Barcelona down to a draw.
- Liverpool: Jurgen Klopp’s side registered a narrow 1-0 victory over Napoli in the potential knock-out game on the final match-day of the group stages.
- Schalke 04: The side will go as an underdog in the round of 16, and were knocked out of round-of-16 in their last three attempts.
