During the 25th match of the ongoing season of the Super Smash between Wellington and Canterbury in Wellington, Canterbury pacer Will Williams registered his maiden T20 five-wicket haul which included a maiden hat-trick in the format as well.
It all happened in the 18th over of Wellington’s innings when they required 19 runs off 15 balls. Fraser Colson, who ended up scoring 37 (29) with the help of four fours and a six, became the first batsman to get out to Williams after he yorked himself only see the ball hitting the stumps.
Facing his first delivery, Wellington wicket-keeper batsman Lauchie Johns’ (0) attempt of playing an aerial shot saw him walking back to the pavilion after Chad Bowes didn’t make any mistake on the field.
On the last delivery of the over, Jamie Gibson (13) ended up giving a caught and bowled chance to Williams who accepted the same gleefully and registered a hat-trick.
Having turned the tables on his own, Williams also bowled the last over to dismiss two more batsmen and register match-winning bowling figures of 2-0-12-5. Apart from Williams, Henry Shipley and captain Cole McConchie also picked up two and one wicket respectively.
After McConchie won the toss and chose to bat, the visitors scored 148/8 in their allotted quota of 20 overs. Having scored 46 (38) with the help of four fours and a six, Canterbury opening batsman Jack Boyle was the top-scorer for them.
