23 Years Before Cowboys Purchase, Jerry Jones Was Excruciatingly Close to Buying Another NFL Team
Today, Jerry Jones and the Dallas Cowboys are synonymous.
However, 23-years before buying the Cowboys, Jones almost bought the San Diego Chargers.
In 1966, a young and ambitious Jerry Jones had his eyes set on owning a football team.
At the time the Chargers were on sale for $10 million and Jones secured funds from Jimmy Hoffa in order to buy the team.
However, his father advised him against it as he believed the AFL was bad business.
Unfortunately for Jones, the AFL and NFL merged the very next year for $10 million.
Jones eventually ended up buying an NFL team in 1989 for a sum of $140 million. Today the Cowboys are valued at $8 billion.
