AJ Styles explains why he lost the WWE Championship to Daniel Bryan in 2018

AJ Styles explains why he lost the WWE Championship in his second reign to Daniel Bryan in November 2018 just before Survivor Series.

WWE Intercontinental Champion AJ Styles has had two runs with the promotions top belt. He first won the WWE title in 2016. He had an entertaining first reign before dropping the title to John Cena after yet another match of the night at the 2017 Royal Rumble.

His second run with the title almost came out of nowhere when he beat Jinder Mahal during their UK tour. This was shortly before the 2017 Survivor Series. That also happened to be the first time the WWE title exchanged outside of North America. More importantly though, it set up a mouth watering clash between Styles and Brock Lesnar.

The match lived up to its expectations and a sequel seemed to be on the cards. Styles and Lesnar were still the WWE and Universal Champion respectively heading into Survivor Series 2018. However, like the year before, the title changed hands just days ahead of the pay-per-view with Daniel Bryan beating Styles out of nowhere.

During a recent Twitch session, AJ Styles discussed the sudden end to his otherwise dominant run in the WWE with the WWE championship.

“I think the reason why you saw that happen was because you already saw Brock Lesnar/AJ Styles and; oh man, I’m just not going to go there… Not you guys, I’m sure you guys would like to have seen the rematch of AJ Styles and Brock Lesnar, but [WWE] didn’t think anyone else would,” Styles said.

He also spoke on his wrestling debut and how excited he was to have an audience.

“For me, I thought it was awesome,” AJ said. “I mean, I was in a ring and it’s not in front of a whole bunch of people but there were people out there. And for me, it was awesome because I was doing it in front of people. I bet that if I watched it now – we’re talking about 21 years ago, it would be terrible. I am sure of it. But for young AJ, well, that first match was under a mask and they called me Mr. Olympia. But I was out there, and I was happy about that.”

Like most combat sports enthusiasts, his passion for watching people fight began with WWE when he witnessed a young Brock Lesnar massacre Hulk Hogan back in 2002. This very passion soon branched out to boxing and mixed martial arts. Over the years he fell in love with the theatrics that preceded the bell and the poetic carnage that followed after. Each bruise a story to tell, each wound a song of struggle, his greatest desire is to be there to witness it all. His favorite wrestler is Shawn Michaels and he believes that GSP is the greatest to ever step foot inside the octagon. Apart from wrestling, he is also fond of poetry and music.
