IPL 2018: Kane Williamson has been appointed captain of SRH
Kane Williamson has been appointed as the stand in captain of SRH for this season of the IPL.
Williamson replaces David Warner, who has been banned by Cricket Australia for 12 months following the ball tampering scandal during the 3rd Test of the ongoing South Africa vs Australia Test series.
As a consequence of the Cricket Australia ban, Warner and Smith will have to relinquish their multi-million IPL contracts as well, as the BCCI does not want the banned players to feature in the IPL.
Due to Warner’s ban, the SRH think tank were searching high and low for a captain and while they had a few players to chose from, it was always going to be interesting to see if they still invested in a foreign captain or turned to a Indian one this time round.
And as a matter of fact they have turned to Kane Williamson, who is the New Zealand captain across all formats.
Williamson has been captain from a very young age, having captained New Zealand’s U-19 side in Malaysia 2008 when he was just 17. New Zealand had reached the semi finals of that tournament.
The new SRH captain has played 15 IPL games, scoring 411 runs at an average of 31.62 and scoring those runs at a strike rate of 129+.
Williamson has rediscovered himself in the limited overs format in the last few weeks, dishing out brilliant T20 and ODI performances in the tri series against Australia and New Zealand.
Williamson has captained New Zealand in 33 matches and has won 17 of them.
