Frenkie De Jong: Ajax star mocks Juventus after Champions League victory

Frenkie De Jong has taken a dig at Juventus after their victory in Turin in the Champions League Quarterfinals.

Juventus wrote history at Allianz Stadium against Juventus with a 2-1 victory yesterday. The first leg ended 1-1 which meant that Massimiliano Allegri’s side carried an all-important away goal from the first leg. However, the Dutch outfit were fearless in the second part of the tie by taking the game to opposition’s end and come out as victors.

It was Juventus who controlled the game for most parts of the game, but the visitors were somehow able to find the back of the net. Record signing Cristiano Ronaldo, who scored the opener at Amsterdam, was the first player to register his name on the score sheet with a piledriving header from a corner. Six minutes later, Juventus defence went to sleep and Donny van de Beek took total advantage of it by slotting the ball in the bottom corner and equalize the score.

For the rest of the half, Juventus controlled the game, but they were not able to break down the resilience defence of Ajax. However, it was a totally different approach in the second half. They were bombing forward in numbers and should have scored a couple of times before the Skipper Matthijs De Ligt bagged one from the corner. The Dutch International leapt the defenders to hand over the lead and progress to the Semifinals of the competition.

Barcelona bound Frenkie De Jong, who spoke to the media after the game said the game at Santiago Bernabeu was tougher than the one at Allianz Stadium.

“I do not know if this is the best match of our lives but it went well,” De Jong told RMC Sport. “In Madrid it was harder because we lost in the first leg.

“Juve are very strong, very disciplined, we showed in the second half the team we could be. The coach asked the same things as usual, play high and play possession.

“Win the Champions League? We are in the semi-finals, we have a chance but we are not favourites. But of course, it’s always possible.”

Here’s how Twitter reacted..

What’s next?

Ajax will have to wait until Wednesday night to get to know about their opponents in the Champions League Semifinals. Either Tottenham Hotspur or Manchester City will face the Dutch outfit.
