Manchester United have extended Martial’s contract until 2020 despite his unwillingness which leaves his agent to have a thought about it.
Manchester United have activated a one-year clause in Anthony Martial’s contract which will keep him at the club until 2020. The French International has been hesitant to commit long-term with the Red Devils after failing to establish himself in the starting eleven under the current manager Jose Mourinho.
Despite being in red-hot form at the moment and leading the scoring chart for the Red Devils in the Premier League, the Portuguese International decided against playing Martial against Liverpool on Sunday. He sat on the bench for most parts of the game to see his team go down in a humiliating fashion against their arch-rivals until he replaced Ander Herrera in the 79th minute.
This has forced to his agent to come out and talk about the contract situation at Manchester United who are trying to tie him down with a long-term deal at Old Trafford, but the answer has been no from the French International who looked to leave the club last summer. But, the English outfit demanded a ludicrous 75 million for their forward which forced off Bayern Munich and Juventus.
Martial’s agent Philippe Lamboley spoke to the French outlet RMC Sport “I am very pessimistic about discussions going positively. They’ve already made several offers that come nowhere near to what we expect. We are far from agreement, for the time being.”
After a blistering start to his Manchester United career by netting 18 goals during his debut campaign under the management of Louis Van Gaal, his numbers have started to decline ever since then. The 22-year-old has not scored more than 15 goals in the last two seasons which has left him worrying on the bench and is currently focusing to get a move elsewhere.
Earlier this season, Anthony Martial declined to put pen to paper in a long-term deal. Before the arrival of Alexis Sanchez during last January, former Monaco forward started 13 games, scoring 9 goals and finding his teammates on 4 occasions. Just when he starting to show his mettle, the signing of Chilean from Arsenal forced Martial to warm the bench during the second part of the season.
It has been a poor turnover for the Red Devils this season who sit 6th in the Premier League, and eleven points off the fourth-placed team Chelsea. The stubbornness to trust some players in the United squad has cost only Jose Mourinho’s side.
Manchester United faithful are getting frustrated because Jose Mourinho is not picking some of the talented crops of players – Paul Pogba, Anthony Martial, Fred, and Andreas Pereira. On the other hand, Nemanja Matic who has struggled ever since the injury has played every game when he is fit to start.
The Red Devils will be on travels once again when they will face the strugglers Cardiff City at Wales on Saturday. With pressure piling up on Mourinho to deliver results, it will be interesting to witness how they would respond following an embarrassing show against Liverpool.
