Rooney returns to England

Rooney returns to England: Wayne Rooney is set to make his comeback to English national team for his farewell match.

Wayne Rooney will return to the English national team later tonight when the Three Lions take on the USA in an international friendly.

The occasion will be significant because this will be Rooney’s final appearance for England. Wayne Rooney announced his international retirement last year, but will make a final appearance as the FA prepares for his grand farewell.

The former Everton and Manchester United forward will sign off as the highest all-time goalscorer for the English national team. Rooney will make his 120th international appearance for England.

As the former captain of the national team steps out for the last time at the Wembley Stadium, the English players have prepared to bid adieu to Wayne Rooney in style.

Rooney returns to England:

The England manager, Gareth Southgate has confirmed that Wayne Rooney will reclaim his legendary number 10 shirt for the national team as he walks out on the pitch tonight.

It is reported that Rooney will not start the game, and Fabian Delph will assume captaincy against the USA. But Rooney will take the captain’s armband once substituted on the pitch.

The forward will also receive a guard of honour from his teammates, as he comes on.

“When I first came into the England set-up, Wayne put his arm around me and helped me a lot,” Fabian Delph said, as quoted by the Evening Standard. “As soon as he comes on I will be giving it (the captain’s armband) him back,” he added.

Earlier, Wayne Rooney talked to Manchester United’s reporter Stephen Gardener about his time at the club, and insisted that he misses the club.

Of course you miss it, Wayne told Stewart Gardener for Manchester United. It was the highlight of my career, playing for Man United and I was there for so long. But it was the right time.

However, Rooney stated that he will be back at Old Trafford during Christmas to watch the team in action. “I will be back over the Christmas period, at a game to watch them. The fans have been brilliant to me and it will be nice to see a few familiar faces when I go to a game over Christmas,” Rooney said.

What next?

The match will be played at Wembley Stadium later tonight, after which England will return to the Nations League as they take on Croatia.
