Brazil played Switzerland in Matchday 1 of Group E.

A match which was almost a repeat of Germany vs Mexico, bar the constant counter-attacking play of the South American side, Brazil were held to a 1-1 draw by Switzerland. The Samba boys landed in Russia as favourites to lift the World Cup trophy. However, just like Germany in the match before.

The first half of the game was quite uneventful, even as FC Barcelona star Philipe Coutinho gave Brazil the lead with his trademark long range goal. However, contrary to expectations, Brazil hardly created any chances as their attacking line often lost possession.

Seven minutes into the start of the second half, Switzerland grabbed on to one of the easiest chances in the game when Xherdan Shaqiri’s seeming cross was headed into the goal by Zuber. With the score at 1-1, Brazil continued to dominate possession but could hardly pose any attacking threats. The South American team lacked the fluidity, especially during their offensive play.

Switzerland’s defensive game was on point as they ensured the tightening of spaces for Brazilian forwards.

Here are some of the tweets from the match.
