MLS Referee Kevin Stott makes a brilliant decision
Referees off-late are on the receiving end due to their lacklustre performances. They easily have the most thankless job in the world. The referees, consciously attempt to enforce the laws of the game to the best of their abilities but unfortunately, a few mistakes are enough to bring them a barrage of abuse.
Deniz Aytekin, who recently was in the limelight due to his poor refereeing which led to the Barcelona comeback against the Paris St Germain is one of those instances when the social media could bring about an arsenal of abuses at the referees. It is high time we give credits to good refereeing.
The first shout-out would go the Kevin Stott, a Major League Soccer (MLS) referee who was involved in the clash between Chicago Fire and Real Salt Lake on Saturday afternoon.
The American ref appeared to have made a horribly poor decision when he allowed Nemanja Nikolic to put the home side 1-0 up in the 11th minute at Toyota Park in Illinois against the Real Salt Lakes.
Assistant makes the error this time:
Stott’s assistant referee had flagged for offside when the striker Nikolic got hold of the ball but Stott allowed the striker’s run which ended with Nikolic putting the ball past the goalkeeper to open the scoring at Toyota Park.
Meanwhile, Real Salt Lakes’s custodian Nick Rimando stood inside of his penalty box blatantly raising his arm waiting for the referee’s call for off-side. However, the flag stayed down after the initial call and the custodian Rimando reacted too late when the striker struck the ball down his right into the empty net.

Neither Rimando nor his teammates could believe what just happened. Real Salt Lakes’ coach Jefferey Cassar was unimpressed too with Stott’s decision.
Was it the right call?
It was actually, surprisingly the right call by the referee. He was aware of the touch by the Lake’s midfielder Stephen Sunday which led the ball on to the path of the striker and was well aware of his assistant’s mistake.
