Vijay Hazare Trophy 2019-20 squad: Delhi have been bolstered by the addition of three players of the current Indian team.

Opening batsman Shikhar Dhawan, wicket-keeper batsman Rishabh Pant and fast bowler Navdeep Saini have made themselves available to play for Delhi in the upcoming season of the Vijay Hazare Trophy. Starting from September 24, the tournament will go on till October 13.

All the three players are currently part of the India’s T20I squad for the South Africa series which will end on September 22. Delhi will play their first match on September 24 against Vidarbha in Baroda.

While Dhawan and Saini are expected to be with the Delhi team throughout the squad, Pant’s availability seems difficult for he is also part of India’s Test team for the three-match series against the Proteas.

As recent as the last season, Dhawan was severely criticized by former Indian cricketers in Sunil Gavaskar and Gautam Gambhir for skipping the Vijay Hazare Trophy as he was with his family in Australia.

While DDCA (Delhi & Districts Cricket Association) is yet to announce the full squad for the tournament, the presence of these players is doubtlessly a sign in the affirmative. The move has it in it to inspire other current Indian players to take part in domestic tournaments. What also remains to be seen for Delhi is who will captain the side with these players in the squad.

“It’s really heartening to see that Rishabh [Pant], Shikhar [Dhawan] and Navdeep [Saini] opted to play for Delhi at first available opportunity. Virat [Kohli] and Ishant [Sharma] also want to help Delhi cricket and I am sure they will also take the field whenever possible.

“It was a promise they made to all Delhi cricket fans at the Annual Awards recently. It shows that DDCA and the players are on the same page to take Delhi cricket to greater heights and win titles,” DDCA President Rajat Sharma said in a statement.
