Neymar earns praise after gifting penalty to Edinson Cavani during PSG vs Galatasaray in their final Champions League group stage match.

Neymar’s stay at the Parc de Princess has been rather tumultuous. He has been booed by the fans, he has had tussles on the pitch and his desire to leave the club is very well known. However, on Wednesday night, the Brazilian commanded respect with a classy gesture during the Champions League match vs Galatasaray.

Earlier in the match, PSG had gone 2-0 up by half-time with Mauro Icardi and Pablo Sarabia scoring within 3 minutes of each other. Neymar then added the third before Kylian Mbappe got into the act. PSG were awarded an 84th minute penalty. However, instead of taking the penalty, Neymar made the touching decision to offer the shot to Cavani.

Naymar and Cavani have a rocky past when it comes to penalties. The Brazilian and the Uruguayan argued over the spot back in 2017 during a match against Lyon. The pair were at it again earlier this year when Neymar denied Cavani the spot kick despite the Uruguayan needing only one more to become PSG’s highest goal scorer.

On Wednesday though, Neymar showed his sensitive side as he handed over the spot kick duty to Cavani in order to get the Uruguayan on the score sheer too. Cavani acknowledged the gesture before scoring the fifth goal of the night against Galatasaray.

Afterwards the Brazilian star told RMC Sport: ‘He’s an excellent penalty shooter, the Matador after all! The only thing he missed was to score, he was able to score and everyone is happy.’

‘It was a nice gesture,’ said Thomas Tuchel after the match. ‘Everyone can see, Ney is very sensitive. He gave the ball to Edi and it’s a good symbol for the team.

‘Neymar was already super important and very good at Montpellier [a 3-1 win on Saturday]. He was decisive for us and he’s getting better.’
