“What we have seen in recent years will be over at the end of this year”- Mercedes chief engineer on its team’s dominance in recent times.
Mercedes has been dominating Formula 1 for the last seven years, but the cycle may soon come to an end, as asserted by the chief engineer James Allison.
The new regulations stepping in 2022, followed by 2025 power unit regulations, may introduce the scope of innovation to other major teams threatening the status quo enjoyed by Mercedes so far.
“What we have seen in recent years will be over at the end of this year. Instead, there will be a new generation of cars with different technical goals. This should make racing more exciting because the car at the front has less influence on the performance of the cars behind it,” said Allison on Mercedes’ Youtube Channel.
Mercedes already eyeing 2022
With aerodynamics freeze being implemented in 2021, there is hardly any development required to be made this year. Hence, Mercedes is shifting to the 2022 change.
“The changes are so drastic that we will be devoting a large part of our technical resources to prepare this year. Our goal is to have a good car that puts us in a good position from 2022.”
“That means working on everything within the budget, even before the first race of the 2021 season. We have to allocate our resources so that we have a good season this year, but at the same time, we have to work on the future and prepare for the new regulations in 2022,” Allison said.
Even Red Bull’s team principal Christian Horner has told that Mercedes can be beaten, and they have shown that this year by outclassing them in Abu Dhabi last year.
Mercedes’ dominance has now been claimed redundant, as other teams face a massive deficit against them, especially ever since Ferrari witnessed a drastic fall in 2020.
