Twitter reacts as Croatia reach their first World Cup final
Croatia met England in the second semifinal of the World Cup.
Luka Modric and his men wrote history as Croatia entered their first ever World Cup final with a victory over England. Mario Mandzukic’s extra time winner secured Croatia’s berth in the final after Kieran Trippier scored in the early minutes of the match to give England the lead.
Croatia will now face France for the World Cup trophy.
England opened the scoring through the set-piece when Kieran Tripper’s free-kick went straight into the goal, with goalkeeper having no chance whatsoever to save the shot. Harry Kane missed an easy chance by his standards, as England failed to double the lead.
Croatia started the second half strongly, and Ivan Perisic finally scored the equaliser when Mandzukic led the counter on the break. In extra-time, Mario Mandzukic scored the winner for the Croatian side.
England, meanwhile, will play Belgium for the third-place playoff. France beat Belgium 1-0 in the first semifinal yesterday.
Here are some of the tweets from the match:
Football still isn’t going home because it has to play a third place game.

Utterly choked, but this young side gave absolutely everything. It’s a huge step forward and they’ll only get better in the future. They can hold their heads high, they did our country proud. Congratulations to Croatia.

Look on the bright side, England. We still have Theresa May.

Pretty amazing that England and Belgium will play each other twice in this tournament, with both games being basically meaningless.

Worry not, England. Cricket World Cup is there next year. It’s at home. And you finally have a team that is good enough to keep it at home.

I absolutely hate Ballon d’Or talk but no matter what happens in the final, just give it to Modric this year.

Surely they can just refuse to play in the third place nonsense ? No one wants it. No one is interested. Grab 11 supporters to play in it. It’s just a load of bobbins
