Red Bull Advisor Helmut Marko Says It is Better For Teams Like Mercedes to 'Copy' Than Go Without Winning

Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko has explained how he empathizes with Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff after the Silver Arrows’ struggles in recent seasons. Marko’s remarks come at a time when the Milton Keynes outfit is in a world of domination of their own.

Red Bull has won all three races of the season so far and does not show any signs of slowing down. Since Mercedes and the rest of the teams find themselves way behind Red Bull at the moment, Marko has explained how it is better to copy his side’s car than to go on struggling.

‘We have suffered for 7 years’: Marko empathizes with Wolff’s struggles

While speaking in an interview with Sport Bild, Helmut Marko said, “I know how Toto Wolff feels now. We have suffered for seven years. That’s why you don’t have to gloat”. The 79-year-old then went on to explain how ‘copying is a daily business in Formula 1’ and that there is nothing ‘dishonorable’ about doing so.

Marko believes that it is better for his rival teams to copy Red Bull’s design rather than ‘accept years of underperformance’ because of their pride and reluctance to accept that someone else has done a better job. He concluded his remarks by stating that in this business, the only thing that matters is winning.

Mercedes find themselves way behind Red Bull in 2023

Max Verstappen and Red Bull seem to have carried on their form from last year as the Dutchman has won two of the opening three races of the 2023 season. The other race was won by his teammate, Sergio Perez.

Consequently of these results, the Milton Keynes outfit has already scored 123 points. They have a whopping 58-point lead over second-placed Aston Martin and a 67-point lead over third-placed Mercedes.

A similar scenario is also seen in the Drivers’ Championship. Reigning double world champion Max Verstappen has already scored 69 points out of a maximum of 78 and leads his Red Bull teammate Sergio Perez by 15 points.

Further down in the championship, Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso has scored 45 points and is 24 points behind Verstappen. Meanwhile, fourth-placed Lewis Hamilton has scored 38 points and is already 31 points behind the Dutchman.

Considering Red Bull’s outstanding start to the new season, Mercedes and the rest of the teams would now hope to put more of a fight at the next race in Baku. The Azerbaijan Grand Prix will take place from April 28 to 30.
