AZ Alkmaar’s AZ Stadium roof collapses after strong winds hit the Netherlands. Fortunately, nobody was hurt in the incident.
Eredivisie side AZ Alkmaar’s 13-year old stadium suffered a roof collapse on Saturday afternoon. The AZ Stadium, which has a capacity of over 17,000 was fortunately empty and no one was hurt. The collapse is attributed to the strong winds that hit the Netherlands. However, nothing has been confirmed yet.

AZ will play a league match tomorrow at RKC Waalwijk but they are scheduled to play a home tie against Mariupol in the Europa League on Thursday. It is very unlikely that the stadium will be fixed by then.

An AZ spokesperson via the Telegraaf, said:
“No people were present in the stadium. That’s the most important thing right now. The consequences for the Europa League match against FC Marioepol next Thursday are not yet clear.”
No home advantage no more
Last Sunday the Alkmaarders played at the AZ stadium, when the team won 4-0 against Fortuna Sittard. With such a great start to the season, it seemed that they would have a wonderful season. However, it now appears that they may not have a stadium to play there home games at for a while.
