During the second T20I of the ongoing Bangladesh’s tour of New Zealand in Napier, a confusing match situation defied cricketing rules as Bangladesh resumed their innings without knowing the target to everyone’s surprise.
After Bangladesh captain Mahmudullah won the toss and chose to field, New Zealand scored on the back of batsman Glenn Phillips’ second T20I half-century before a second rain interruption forced the players to enter their respective dressing rooms.
With a more than expected delay to the match, there was a loss in overs which resulted in the officials ending the home team’s innings. In an utterly surprising set of circumstances, Bangladesh resumed without a target in place which further invited a halt in only the second over of their innings.

The chaos only grew when all the players were enjoying a drinks break after playing for less than 10 deliveries and the officials and members of the Bangladeshi team management were gathering in Crowe’s room.
It was then learnt that match referee Jeff Crowe hadn’t signed the sheet containing the revised target for the visitors. Contrary to the previous assumption of Bangladesh needing to chase a 148-run target (in 16 overs) to win the match, they were subsequently assigned a 170-run target in 16 overs to win the match.
DLS method, which is mostly beyond the understanding of a majority of fans and even players, put on display another astonishing incident to create plentiful confusion at the McLean Park.

How is it possible to start a run chase without knowing what you’re chasing? Crazy stuff. #NZvBAN

For the first time in international cricket, the team batting second has started batting and umpires are still calculating score according to DLS. 😂

Target at the start of the Bang innings was 148 off 16. NZ innings finished at 173/5 in 17.3. After 9 balls in the Bang inns game there was an interruption & target was modified to 170.Generally DLS target confusions have been wrt the par score & scoring 1 run more to stay ahead
