Alex Hales: The opening batsman from Sydney Thunder scored a whirlwind 49th half-century to hand his team a brisk start.

During the 19th match of the ongoing 10th season of the Big Bash League between Sydney Thunder and Melbourne Stars in Canberra, Sydney Thunder opening batsman Alex Hales scored his 49th half-century to provide his team with a brisk start.

Opening the batting with Usman Khawaja (37), Hales’ first boundary came off Billy Stanlake in the second over. In the following over bowled by Stars captain Glenn Maxwell, Hales hit a six and a couple of fours to up the ante in the powerplay.

On the last two deliveries of the powerplay, Hales attacked Liam Hatcher to hit another six and a four and Thunder accumulated as many as 42 runs from the first four overs.

Not sparing Afghanistan spinner Zahir Khan either, the 31-year old batsman scored a couple of fours to dismantle the opposition. Maxwell’s decision of introducing Zampa into the attack went in vain as Hales hit two sixes off the premier spinner. While the first one was sort of a mis-hit, the second one went over the roof to bring up the fastest half-century by a Thunder batsman.

Hales, who completed his eighth BBL half-century off 21 deliveries, ended up scoring 71 (29) with the help of eight fours and five sixes before getting dismissed by the part-time spin of Nic Maddinson.
