Chris Woakes replacement in IPL 2020: Anrich Nortje replaces English all-rounder at Delhi Capitals

Anrich Nortje: The South African fast bowler will represent Delhi Capitals in what will be his maiden stint in the Indian Premier League.

South Africa fast bowler Anrich Nortje has replaced England all-rounder Chris Woakes at Delhi Capitals for the 13th season of the Indian Premier League slated to begin from September 19 in UAE.

Woakes, who recently powered England to an emphatic victory against Pakistan, was bought by Delhi Capitals at his base price of INR 1.5 crore in the auction last year. The 31-year old player had revealed in April that him pulling out of IPL 2020 was more because of family reasons than his ambition of extending his England career.

Nortje, 26, was picked by Kolkata Knight Riders for IPL 2019 but had to miss the tournament due to a shoulder injury. It is worth mentioning that Nortje had made his T20I debut against India in Mohali last year.

While the right-arm bowler has only played 16 international matches across formats, he had come into recognition on the back of his performance in the Mzansi Super League. Having represented Cape Town Blitz in two season so far, Nortje had picked 14 wickets at an average of 22.21, an economy rate of 8.11 and a strike rate of 16.43.

“I am excited to join the Delhi Capitals, a team that was the talk of the tournament last season. With its exciting mix of experienced and young players, and a stellar coaching line-up, there is no doubt this is going to be a massive learning experience for me.

“I am grateful to the Delhi Capitals management for giving me this opportunity,” Nortje said in a statement issued by Delhi Capitals.
