Shardul Thakur: The Indian pacer was successful in picking the most important English wicket in the third session of the first day.

During the first day of the first Test of the ongoing India’s tour of England in Nottingham, India pacer Shardul Thakur picked the biggest wicket of England captain Joe Root to join the wicket-taker’s list.

Brought into the attack for his third spell, all it took for Thakur to send back Root was a delivery. The right-arm bowler bowled a fuller delivery which swung into Root the extent that the right-hand batsman was found wanting in front of the stumps.

The fact that Root didn’t even care to challenge the umpire’s decision spoke highly about how straight he was hit in line with the stumps. Coming in to bat at No. 4 in the 22nd over, Root departed after scoring 64 (108) with the help of 11 fours. In what was his 50th Test half-century, England needed more from Root especially after two wickets early in the third session.

Thakur, who has a knack of making things happen, once again made instant impact in an international match. In addition to dismissing Root, Thakur also accounted for Ollie Robinson’s (0) wicket in the same over reducing the hosts to 155/8.

Before Jonny Bairstow’s dismissal right before the tea break, England were 138/3 and will have to do some serious pondering after losing six wickets for 22 runs in the evening session today.
