Ruled out of the ongoing three-match ODI series between India and New Zealand due to a stiff back, India batter Shreyas Iyer was quick to acknowledge a mind-blowing batting effort from teammate Shubman Gill in the first ODI at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium.

Iyer took to social media platform Twitter to express admiration of a “classy” Gill via a congratulatory tweet. In fact, Iyer wasn’t the only high-profile personality who was wax lyrical about Gill. The fact that an opponent in New Zealand all-rounder Daryl Mitchell also praised Gill’s effort on a Wednesday afternoon spoke highly of the latter’s career-best performance.
“Very special, to get a double century in one-dayers is pretty cool,” Mitchell told Star Sports during the mid-innings break today.
All class 💯💯

Gill, who completed his half-century and century in the 19th and 30th over respectively, reached to the 150-run mark for the first time in his international career in the 43rd over. In terms of strike rate, the last three overs brought the best out of Gill as he hit a total of six sixes to bring up a maiden double century in the penultimate over.
Gill, who didn’t deter from his natural game in this phase, put faith in the same to dominate the Kiwi bowlers. Not letting his shape get affected whilst playing the big shots, Gill stood his ground only to hit right-arm pacers down the ground with what appeared to be effortless shots around the sight screen.
