MS Dhoni is widely regarded as one of the sharpest and shrewdest minds in the game with his brave and unorthodox methods being the stuff of legends. And in the latest in the long list MSD’s master plans we have learned that he gave some advice to the national team selectors in regards to the upcoming Champions Trophy. It was apparently Dhoni who asked the national team selectors to come up with a five man stand by list for the Champions Trophy.
Too often in the past the Indian team has been hampered by injuries which has led them being handicapped during away tours. Dhoni has seen how such injuries could derail the entire squad as the lack of emergency back ups can cost the side.
The national team selectors do not want a repeat of the embarrassing events that took place during India’s tour of England in 2011. Several Indian players were injured and had to play through their pain due to the lack of adequate backups.

And when the backups did arrive, they were grossly unfit and under prepared to play up to their potential. Dhoni does not want a repeat of such an event which is why he asked the selectors to come up a stand by list.
”It was Dhoni’s idea to keep the standbys ready. The Indian team has suffered a lot with breakdowns in the middle of big series,” a topmost BCCI executive told the Times of India.
Rishabh Pant, Dinesh Karthik, Suresh Raina, Shardul Thakur and Kuldeep Yadav will be on stand by and will train at the NCA in Bangalore.
In perhaps what is unsurprising, Gautam Gambhir is not selected even among the back ups as the BCCI continue to cold shoulder the KKR captain.
