“I have not spoken a lot with him,” Hazard said. “The first time was at Euro 2016 in France. He had called me. He said to me: ‘It would be good if you come.’

“When Zidane calls you, it is serious. Honestly, that is something, he has this power over me. He did not do my head in in the middle of the Euros.

“He just said to me that he was watching me. To have a good Euros and to produce what I can do.

“‘We will meet up one day if you come to Madrid,’ he said. It always stayed in my head. It was always a dream to play for Real.”

“After the 2018 World Cup, I had wanted to come,” he said. “The bosses at Chelsea said no. I had to do one year with Sarri and I didn’t want to leave Chelsea on bad terms. I tried to do my best.”

Hazard then spoke about his time at Stamford Bridge with fondness.

“I am no longer the same player at at Chelsea. I arrived as a young talent. Twice the best player in Ligue 1.

“In England, they know who you are but they don’t give you marks for that. You have to show it.

“I passed six great years. The third year, with Mourinho, was more complicated. I played bad matches but there were good seasons and consistency. And I left as one of the best in the world, recognised as such by the others.

“I am proud of that. Chelsea allowed me to be who I am.”
