England played Colombia in the final match of round-of-16.

The Three Lions finally succeeded in shedding the curse around penalties as they beat Colombia to reach the quarterfinals of the World Cup. After the match ended 1-1 after 120 minutes, England scored four out of five penalties as they made an incredible comeback after Henderson missed one early in the shootout.

With this win, England will now face Sweden in the quarterfinals, who beat Switzerland in their round-of-16 match.

The match was marred by rash challenges from the Colombian side, as they received six yellow cards in total for their fouls. Harry Kane opened the scoring in the first half when England were awarded a penalty for one such challenge. While the European side managed to hold them satisfactorily, Colombia refused to give up and scored in the final minute of stoppage to take the match to extra time.

English players looked exhausted, and even when they led a few attacks on the Colombian defence in the final fifteen minutes, they were unable to penetrate through the defensive line.

In the penalty shoot-out, Harry Kane, Marcus Rashford, Kieran Trippier and Eric Dier scored their penalties as England kept their hopes alive in the World Cup.
