The F1 points system is how the FIA awards the drivers and constructors championship at the end of the season.
Points are awarded to drivers and constructors based on where they finish in a race. The points system has undergone a lot of changes over the years. But the current system in place has been there since the 2010 season.

In the current system, the winning driver and his constructor receive 25 points. The second-place finisher gets 18 points, and the 3rd place finisher 15 points. One bonus point is awarded to the driver and team with the fastest lap of the race. Points are only awarded to the Top 10 finishers in a race.

What is the Drivers’ points system?
Drivers who finish in the top 10 positions get the points awarded to them. The rest of the drivers who finish 11-20 scores 0 points.
The point system for drivers goes all the way from 25 to 1 for the top 10 places. On top of that, the drivers earn an additional point for the fastest lap.
On a sprint weekend, only the top 8 drivers are awarded the points. Drivers who place themselves on the grid positions of P1 to P8 score eight, seven, six, five, four, three, two and one point, respectively.
Position | Points Scored |
1 | 25 |
2 | 18 |
3 | 15 |
4 | 12 |
5 | 10 |
6 | 8 |
7 | 6 |
8 | 4 |
9 | 2 |
10 | 1 |
11-20 | 0 |
What is the Constructors’ points system?
Apart from the drivers’ championship title, the teams simultaneously also battle for the constructors’ title in a championship season.
The points system for the constructors’ titles is the same as the drivers’ titles. Although, for constructors’ points, the teams add up the points bagged by both of their drivers. The higher a team finishes, the more money they have at their disposal in the next year’s championship.
Position | Points Scored |
1 | 25 |
2 | 18 |
3 | 15 |
4 | 12 |
5 | 10 |
6 | 8 |
7 | 6 |
8 | 4 |
9 | 2 |
10 | 1 |
Furthermore, if a race is cancelled before 75% of the planned distance has been completed, the points are halved. The team and Constructor with the most points at the end of the season win the Championship.
If points are level, priority is given to the driver with more wins. If that is the same it is decided on the most second places, and so on.
Tiebreaker in F1
Sometimes the title contenders find themselves with the same numbe of points at the end of the season. In that case, FIA awards the crown of champion to the driver who had the most victories in that particular season.
If both the drivers have equal number of wins in the season, the driver with the most second places keeps gets to become the champion.
