Amidst all the debate about F1 having become boring recently, with one team dominating more often than not, former driver Karun Chandhok has suggested an interesting idea. The 39-year-old’s remarks come a day after Max Verstappen helped Red Bull win their fifth consecutive race of the 2023 season.
Since F1 races in recent years have witnessed limited action, Chandhok has suggested that a new rule should be added that requires all drivers to use all three tire compounds. As things stand, all drivers must use two different tire compounds for a dry race, with no such rule applicable if it is a wet race.
Another race that underlines my crusade since 2016 that we need a single line added to the sporting rules to say: “All 3 tyre compounds must be used during a race that’s not declared wet at any stage”.
The cream will always rise, but it would be more exciting to watch! #F12023

If Chandhok’s suggestion is implemented, F1 races could become more interesting as it will mean that different teams can use more different strategies. As a result, such a rule would require team strategists to remain on their toes at all times to ensure that their drivers have the best chance of getting the best result for the team.
F1 fans react to Karun Chandhok’s suggestion
Several fans, such as Brenn agreed with Karun Chandhok by stating that having three tires mandatory for a race ‘is a great idea‘. They believe that such a rule will help F1 to become ‘more of a team sport rather than an individual,’ with teams having to use varying tactics.
3 Tyres is a great idea, makes it much more of a team sport rather than an individual, the tactics gets more interesting and varied, more potential drama.

Meanwhile, some other fans, such as Andy suggested F1 get the old days of refueling back as doing so will ‘really shake strategy up‘.
Refuelling needs to come back to really shake strategy up

And then there were some fans, such as Ambar, who had reservations about Chandhok’s idea. They believe that even if teams were required to use all three different tire compounds, then the dominant teams would still ‘find a way around it‘.
Unfortunately teams will still find a way around it. If they think the hard is extremely slow and difficult to warm up, they will just dump that tyre after just one lap.
Same goes other way round, if softs are degrading faster, as we could have seen in Miami if they were used.

Considering fans’ differing opinions about this idea, it is fair to say that there is no easy decision to make the sport more interesting.
Red Bull finds itself way ahead of the competition in 2023
Red Bull has had an utterly dominant start to the F1 2023 season, winning all five races. Reigning champion Max Verstappen has won three (Bahrain, Australia, Miami) of them, while his teammate Sergio Perez has won the other two (Saudi Arabia, Azerbaijan).
Consequently, of such a start, the Milton Keynes outfit has a huge lead in the Constructors’ Championship. They are currently on 224 points and have a whopping 122-point lead over second-placed Aston Martin. Considering how the season has so far panned, it is fair to say that Red Bull is the team to beat this campaign.
