Max Verstappen had a hilarious interaction with Lewis Hamilton during the Spanish Grand Prix press conference after the two drivers finished on the podium. The Dutchman won his fourth race of the 2023 season while the Briton claimed his second podium.
Despite being arch-rivals historically and not having seen eye to eye for quite some time, the two now seem to have put their differences aside. The ease at which Verstappen was able to joke with Hamilton seems to suggest this.
The hilarious moment began after Hamilton got his $241 sunglasses out during the press conference. As the Briton was flaunting them, Verstappen said that the 38-year-old would soon be a “meme“.
“That looks good“: Verstappen on Hamilton’s sunglasses
As seen in the video below, Lewis Hamilton was struggling to make eye contact with the reporter who was asking the question because of the intense light in the room. As a result, he pulled out his pair of sunglasses and flaunted them.
On seeing this, Max Verstappen hilariously said, “That looks good. May we can come here with our helmets on the next time“. Hamilton then explained that he had his glasses on because it was so bright.
After sharing some laughs together, Verstappen then ended his remarks by stating, “We will get the meme now. You know when you (Hamilton) said that with the glasses“.
Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton shared an intense rivalry in 2021
Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton shared an extremely intense rivalry in 2021 when they battled each other for the world championship. The rivalry at times got so heated that it got to the point of being toxic at times.
There were repeated jabs that were passed from both ends and the two drivers also had multiple collisions on the track. While the rivalry was already very intense throughout the season, it arguably reached its boiling point at the season finale in Abu Dhabi.
It was ‘winner takes all’ as both drivers entered the final race level on points. Since Verstappen eventually emerged victorious in controversial circumstances, it left Hamilton and the rest of the Mercedes team fuming.
Because of how the championship was decided, a thorough investigation was conducted after the season ended. It was ultimately deemed that a “human error” was made by the race director Michael Masi. Since Masi was deemed at fault, he was eventually replaced by Niels Wittich and Eduardo Freitas.
