Mercedes' George Russell extremely critical about his 2022 season despite a win and several podium finishes

Mercedes’ young driver George Russell talks about the 2022 season and how it was sub-par below his standards. There is a lot for the driver to understand and implement in the upcoming 2023 season.

George Russell impressed Mercedes boss Toto Wolff during his time at Williams. Moreover, he was always far ahead of his fellow driver in competition and eventually had to join one of the best teams in the sport.

He was against a seven times world champion Lewis Hamilton and all eyes were on both of them. However, the title challenge plans did not go as planned for the team for many reasons.

A shift from Williams to Mercedes for George Russell

Mercedes enjoyed an interesting 2021 season winning the constructors championship only losing out on the driver’s championship. The porpoising and reliability issues did not lead Russell to compete for the championship.

Despite the difficult season, he was able to defeat his seven times world champion teammate and finish ahead in the standings. The aim for the British driver was to win more races.

Not being able to compete with the likes of Red Bull in terms of pace was a disappointment. Despite that, he won the 2022 Sao Paulo Grand Prix and had multiple podium finishes to his name.

A new set of standards for the 2022 Brazilian Grand Prix winner

Despite the challenges, George Russell feels fortunate enough of taking crucial learnings from the team. Working alongside Lewis Hamilton is a morale booster for the 24-year-old driver.

The British driver has set his eyes on winning races in the near future and competing with Hamilton. He is hopeful that when he looks back years later, the 2022 season was a stepping stone for the positive changes in his performance.

Mercedes will be hoping to work on the car’s flaws and deliver a championship-contending car in the 2023 season. With Mick Schumacher in the mix as well, the German team’s development curve should rise instead of fall for 2023.
