What happened to Michael Schumacher and how is he now?

Michael Schumacher, at the time, was the synonym for F1. Even if someone had not watched an F1 race in their lifetime, they absolutely knew or at least heard about the Ferrari superstar.

In a career of over 19 years, Schumacher won 91 races and seven world titles, making him one of the most decorated drivers of all time. These accolades also make him arguably the greatest F1 driver of all time.

Only Lewis Hamilton statistically overpowers him. It showcases his glorious career and why he remains one of the most adored F1 drivers of all time.

What happened to Michael Schumacher, and how is he now?

Schumacher finally retired from F1 in 2013. The German race driver, after pinning a nail in his career, had plenty of hours of leisure time, which he tried to fill with some adventure sports.

However, it preceded an unfortunate in his life. In December 2013, Schumacher went on a skiing holiday with his family when he got hit by a big rock on his head while skiing down a mountain.

It ended up with him going into a coma. Though there has been some progress with the little information his family has given, he is certainly out of the coma.

But most probably, he is just a shadow of his former self. According to his wife, Corrina Schumacher, “Michael is here,” she said in his Netflix documentary, which aired in 2021.

However, his life remains private, away from all the cameras. His family made that decision, who believed the German should be away from all the curious eyes in this state.

The legacy continues

Schumacher’s son Mick Schumacher made his F1 debut in 2021 after winning the F2 championship in the previous year. Though he had to lose his seat with Haas for the 2023 season, he is seen as a talented prospect.

While it would be unfair to expect him to match his father’s legacy, much is expected from him, and several teams might seek his services in 2024. For 2023 he has been hired as a reserve driver for Mercedes.

It could only happen as he finished his relations with the Ferrari’s driver academy. Will he ever return to the team where his father had maximum success? That seems unlikely for now. But surely, he has the talent to extend his father’s legacy in the sport.
