Gwent, the Witcher series’ spinoff card game, will no longer be supported after 2023. As announced recently, most of the staff working on the title will be shifted to other projects. 2023 will also be the last year that Gwent will receive any new cards. With 72 cards waiting in the wings, they will be released in April, July, and September 2023. While this may seem like the end, the developers are looking to incorporate a new community-driven system to maintain balance.

Gwent to no longer receive new cards after 2023
The game’s 2023 roadmap blog with director Vladimir Tortsov had a lot of details for fans. For starters, the game will no longer be fully supported after 2024. While a skeleton crew will keep things rolling, new content and large-scale changes won’t be happening. Interestingly, the developers mentioned a community-led change system that may be incorporated in the future:
“We’re working on the solution which will allow players to do it directly in the Gwent client, so it’s not some complicated external system. You don’t need to be a developer or have special access. Of course, on the flip side, maybe the system won’t be as robust as the tools that our team currently has in terms of full-scale works, adding completely new cards, inventing new abilities, and things like that.”
Speaking about balance changes he stated:
“But when it comes strictly to the balancing tools, the main balancing tools, that’s something that we believe is feasible, and will ensure that players can interact with the game, not just by playing it, but also deciding which direction it should go balance-wise.”
The last 7 years with @PlayGwent were the best years of my professional career. I’ve met so many amazing people and made so many unforgettable friendships. I’ll always look back at this time with a huge smile. Let’s make 2023 as epic as possible! Love you all! ❤️

After more than five years of running and countless esports tournaments, the sun looks to be setting on Gwent. While this isn’t complete doom and gloom, it remains to be seen how players will be given the power to maintain balance in the title.
