Jack Grealish responds to 4-year ban for fan who racially abused Tammy Abraham during Chelsea’s match against Wolverhampton last year.

Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham was a victim of racial abuse during Chelsea’s 5-2 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers on September 14th last year. The accused, Josef Smith, was found guilty of racist behaviour after he “curled his fists under his armpits in a chimp-like gesture” when Abraham scored a hat-trick.

Smith has been banned from attending matches for 4 years. Apart from the banning, he has also been fined £800 and ordered to pay £600 in costs and a £50 victim surcharge, making a total bill of £1,450. However, Abraham’s former teammate from his loan stay at Aston Villa, Jack Grealish is far from pleased with the punishment.

The person that Grealish is referring to, is a Newcastle supporter who was recently handed a life ban for revealing his genitalia while celebrating the Magpies goal in the FA Cup 4th round replay. In doing so, the Aston Villa midfielder has rightfully pointed out how lenient the punishment is for someone who has willingly indulged himself in an act motivated by racial aggression.

While public indecency and racism are actually serious problems, the former could be chalked down to someone having a brain fade. Racism on the other hand, is a very serious underlying problem, that is ingrained in someone and not merely just a mistake of the moment.
