Jose Mourinho on Anthony Martial: Manchester United boss gave the reason he excluded Alexis Sanchez from the squad for the West Ham game.
Manchester United are yet to bag a win since the end of the international break earlier this month, and suffered their second defeat this week. West Ham United cruised past Jose Mourinho’s men 3-1 at the London Stadium.
Jose Mourinho’s played a 3-5-2 formation in the first half, which seemingly backfired as the centre-back trio of Smalling, Lindelof and McTominay was hardly effective in evading the attacking threats.
Jose Mourinho spoke to media after a disappointing defeat against West Ham United. He also spoke about the decision to start Anthony Martial in the match, while excluding the underperforming Alexis Sanchez from the squad.
“Look for how many months are people asking for Martial, Martial, Martial and saying how Alexis isn’t playing well enough. This week it was time to agree and leave Alexis out,” Jose Mourinho said.
Before the match, the United boss stated that he left Sanchez and Valencia out because he had ‘options.’
In the post-match press conference, Mourinho stated, again, that he started Martial because it was “something that you are asking for a long, long time.”
Jose Mourinho’s side have only scored 10 points from seven Premier League matches, which is the joint lowest with David Moyes’ side in 2013/14. The goal difference for Manchester United stands at a meager -2.
United will now return to Old Trafford for the Champions League action, as they take on Spanish club Valencia next week. In the Premier League, Manchester United will host Newcastle.
