Kepa makes a phenomenal save for Spain vs Romania to justify his selection ahead of David De Gea during their Euro 2020 qualification campaign.
For many years David De Gea has been considered the best goalkeeper in the world. The Manchester United shot stopper watched off competition from Iker Casillas and Pepe Reina to become Spain’s undisputed no.1 goalkeeper. However, a drop in form has seen Kepa make that position his own in recent times.

David De Gea entered the world cup as arguably the best keeper in the world. However, by the end of it, he saw his reputation tarnished and performed equally poorly for Manchester United. He eventually lost his place to a younger Kepa who plays for Chelsea in the Premier League.
Spain took on Romania last night in the Euro 2020 qualifiers. David De Gea looked on from the bench as Kepa started in front of the goal. Spain started brilliantly as a Sergio Ramos penalty put them ahead in the 29th minute.
Paco Alcacer then made it 2-0 a couple of minutes after half-time. Spain looked like they would make it 5 out of 5 in Bucharest; having won their first 4 matches before. However, Florin Andone pulled one back in the 59th minute to make the score 1-2 and bring some life back into the game.

Spain faced a nervy last 10 minutes as Romania ferociously hunted the equaliser and they almost managed to escape defeat in injury time. However, Kepa’s heroics denied them the leveller and gave Spain their 5th victory. In doing so, Kepa showcased why he was preferred over David De Gea in this line up.

David De Gea may have warmed the bench in this match but it doesn’t seem like he will do so for long. Spain Manager Robert Moreno hinted at rotating his goalkeepers in the future.
“If the goalkeepers are at the level that they have shown up to now, it’s possible to alternate them,” Moreno told reporters.
“I don’t believe that in a national team it’s crucial that the same goalkeeper plays all the games.”
However, at the moment it is safe to assume that Kepa will most likely be their no.1 shot stopper for important fixtures. David De Gea will have to perform out of his skin with Manchester United to displace Kepa from the starting line-up.
