Luiz Suarez could return to former club at the expiration of his Barcelona contract which is set to run out in the summer of 2021.

Luis Suarez is regarded as one of, if not the best striker of the last decade. He has been a star for every club he has ever played and has won several accolades. However, at 33, he is now nearing the close of a fantastic career.

Suarez has previously said that he desires to stay with Barcelona beyond his current contract. However, a former teammate believes that the Uruguayan could be heading back to one of his old clubs.

His CV includes a few impressive teams such as Liverpool and Ajax but it is the club that Suarez started his career with that is emerging as a likelier destination for the man who has scored 191 goals and provided 108 assists in 270 appearances for the Catalan club.

Sebastian Abreu, a player-manager with Uruguayan club Boston River, who was playing up front for Nacional in the 2004-05 campaign as Suarez was coming through the ranks at the club’s academy, is plotting a reunion with his former national teammate.

He told Uruguayan radio station 890:

“I spoke with Suarez and he said that if I am the coach of Nacional he could return.”

Abreu has only just begun his career as a tactician so it remains to be seen if Suarez does make the move. He did hint back in February that he still desires a stay at Barcelona.

“There is the option that if I play 60 per cent of the games I’m available for next year, I [will] renew automatically,” he told Catalan radio station RAC1 in February.

“I am happy here and my family is too. I’m where I always wanted to be and I feel useful, but the decision has to come from the club. I want to stay here but that doesn’t depend on me.”

Suarez could perhaps move after a couple of years in which time, Abreu can gain the experience required as well.
