Max Verstappen and Daniel Ricciardo were involved in an ugly crash at the Azerbaijan GP, as Ricciardo slammed into the rear of Verstappen after Ricciardo came out behind Max after the duo got done with their respective pit stops.
Ricciardo had battled hard in the initial part of the race to overtake Verstappen, but unfortunately couldn’t really set the pace with his supersofts after his pit stop, as Verstappen came out in front of him.
Ricciardo then tried to go all out in order to overtake Verstappen, but ended up slamming his car right into the rear of Verstappen’s.
All the talk post the race was about what the mood would be like in that Red Bull camp, as the Red Bull duo were flirting with danger all through the race, but had kept it clean for most parts of it.
Verstappen refused to blame Daniel Ricciardo for the crash and was sorry for what the duo had done to the chances of the team as a whole.
“I don’t think we need to speak who is at fault because at the end of the day we are racing for a team and representing other people but when this happens it is just not good enough for both of us,” Verstappen said.
“As racing drivers you go for every inch and of course you are not happy when you collide as teammates but we are very fair to each other and spoke immediately after the race.
“The tow is very strong so as soon as he was in front I was catching again and we were pretty similar speeds and always very close to each other.
“I think before that it was hard racing but fair and we gave each other space, as we had a little brush with the wheels, I think in racing that can happen. It was really disappointing for the team as we have lost a lot of points today unnecessarily.” he added.
Verstappen felt that the team should assess the situation, but not letting the duo race will not be the solution, as such things happen on a racetrack.
“This has happened before [elsewhere] and I think you learn from it and I think of course we have to make sure it does not happen again.
“I don’t think letting us not race anymore is the way forward but of course we will talk about it and see what happens.” he concluded.
