Monday Night Football declares Top 10 Premier League Goals of the decade
#10) Vincent Kompany vs Leicester City (2019)
Manchester City went on to win the Premier League last season. However, with Liverpool hovering very close behind, the defending champions couldn’t afford to drop points. Chasing their second consecutive Premier League title, Pep Guardiola’s side ran into a brick wall in the shape of Leicester City.
With 20 minutes left in the match and City desperately needing 3 points, Club captain Vincent Kompany decided to take a risk. You can see him look at the goal a couple of times before launching a well measured strike from over 30 yards out!
The ball went on to beat Kasper Schmeichel and eventually gave City the win. Pep Guardiola’s reaction after the goal says it all. City would eventually overcome Liverpool’s threat to register their 2nd on the trot and 4th Premier League title.
#9) Andros Townsend vs Manchester City (2018)
Here’s another on this list that includes Manchester City. However, this one saw the eventual champions concede a blinder that frankly no one saw coming. Pep Guardiola’s side had been phenomenal through the season.
They were beating teams left and right but at home, if it was possible, they seemed even more dangerous and yet Crystal Palace managed to slay the beast at their own home. A 3-2 win at the Etihad was the perfect way for Crystal Palace to embrace Christmas.
Man City’s attempt at clearance after Crystal Palace’s free kick saw Bernardo Silva head the ball out of the box. However, the ball found Andros Townsend, who sent the fall flying into the top corner from over 30 yards. This goal was deservedly given the goal of the season for the 18/19 season.
#8) Emre Can vs Watford (2017)
From one goal of the season to another. Back in 2017, Liverpool were not the juggernauts they are today. Their target at the time was a place in the top 4 and their bid was strengthened through Emre Can’s brilliant bicycle kick vs Watford.
Emre Can will probably never score another goal like that in his life and that is alright because the only one time he has, he stole the show. Can himself admitted that he had never scored a better goal than that in his life.
Can ran into the box to meet a high pass from Lucas Leiva, He somehow manged to get his huge body up in the air and managed to hook a ridiculously angled shot beyond the keeper sending everyone in the stadium or watching at home into a frenzy.
#7) Olivier Giroud vs Crystal Palace (2017)
Olivier Giroud is seen by many as a handy striker. He will regularly get you goals every season but there will be nothing too flashy. Just the typical grab and smash stuff. Imagine the surprise on everyone’s face when Giroud scored a goal from a scorpion kick!
To pull off one in itself is an amazing achievement, evidenced by the fact that this is the only one of its kind in this list. The goal came when Giroud used to ply his trade in North London with Arsenal. Strangely enough, the French striker lost out to Andy Carroll’s scissor kick for the goal of the month. However, Giroud had the last laugh in the end as he was awarded the Puskas award instead.
#6) Pajtim Kasami vs Crystal Palace (2013)
Pajtim Kasami isn’t exactly a name you think of when you picture top 10 goals of the decade. However, he will always be remembered for pulling off one of the most aesthetically pleasant goals you will ever see. Fulham were trailing 1-0 before Kasami took matters in his hand and equalised the score.
He bought the long ball down on his chest and then volleyed straight through the ball into the nets, immortalising himself to Fulham fans. Fulham went on to add 3 more goals to win the match 4-1 and register back to back victories for the first time that season.
#5) Jack Wilshere vs Norwich City (2013)
This was Jack Wilshere’s first goal at the Emirates in the Premier League and what a way to bring it. Compared to the others in this list, this goal had the simplest of finishes. However, its beauty was in its build up.
Wilshere collected the ball deep in his own half before feeding it to Cazorla on the left who passed it back to Wilshere near the edge of the box. Wilshere and Giroud then combined with three beautiful flicks before Wilshere volleyed it from close range into the net.
Arsenal would go on to register 3 more goals to win the match 4-1 but the Wilshere goal was eastly the pick of the bunch. The one flicks and the deft passes make this one of the best team goals you will ever see in the Premier League.
#4) Robin Van Persie vs Aston Villa (2013)
For many years, Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger battled for Premier league glory. One of Wenger’s most potent weapon was Robin Van Persie. However, with Arsenal failing to clinch the league after 2004, Van Persie eventually jumped ship to Manchester United.
Manchester United needed to win the match against Aston Villa to win their 20th Title. This was also the legendary manager’s last year at the helm and his players were desperate to send him out with yet another trophy to his name.
Wayne Rooney sent a long through ball from his own half that found who else but Van Persie. The forward collected on his killer left foot. There was no way he would miss. He didn’t and Ferguson left Old Trafford with yet another Premier League title.
#3) Papiss Cisse vs Chelsea (2012)
This was a nightmare season for Chelsea. No one could have predicted that they would play this poorly. Newcastle United on the other hand, were on a dream run all thanks to January signing Papiss CIsse. The Newcastle legend was absolutely unplayable on the night.
He had already scored a goal to give his side the lead. However, he was far from done. With the match in stoppage time, Cisse received a ball from a throw in. The Senegalese caught Cech out with an outrageous curling attempt from the corner of the box that dipped and looped into the top corner to seal the points and maintain the Magpies’ top-half charge.
Newcastle defied all expectations that season and finished the season at 5th place. Chelsea landed a spot below at 6th place. However, they miraculously won the champions league on Penalties to salvage an embarrassingly poor season.
#2) Peter Crouch vs Manchester City (2012)
Just like the other goal against Manchester City, this was a volley. Much like that season, the goal was awarded the goal of the season and yet City would win the league. However, this goal is much better than Townsend’s goal for one single reason; Peter Crouch.
Crouch was a footballer too tall for his own good and yet he played like he wasn’t even aware of it. He may not have a lot of trophies to show for but he was a delight to watch and the goal against Manchester City as a Stokes player proves exactly why.
Asmir Begovic found Crouch with a big kick forward. Crouch spooned a header across, and got the ball back from Jermaine Pennan. He then took a no-look volley that made its way into the net without touching the grass even once after leaving Begovic’s foot.
How many goals of the season have you seen where the player scores without looking?
#1) Wayne Rooney vs Manchester City (2011)
Monday Night Football list declares Wayne Rooney’s goal vs Man City as the best of their Top 10 Premier League Goals of the decade. This goal is perhaps the best goal one has ever witnessed in the Premier League all through the years, let alone the last 10. Everything about it was just perfect.
Rooney rocked Manchester United when reports came out that he had demanded to leave the club earlier in the season. They had just been beaten by Wolves in their previous match and Rooney had been brilliantly shackled by Vincent Kompany in the match.
However, with 12 minutes left in the game, Rooney showed exactly why the United faithful wanted him to stay at Old Trafford. Nani sent in a cross from right that deflected off Pablo Zabaleta’s back. Rooney, who lurked near the penalty spot, elevated his body in the air to send an acrobatic overhead effort that has since found its way in history books. Manchester United would go on to win the match 2-1 and eventually won the Premier League.
