Perhaps the biggest shadow upon Michael Jordan’s career is his retirement. But in the first instance of his departure from the league it involved his father’s untimely demise. But what’s more intriguing about the case was that James Jordan had mysteriously disappeared. It led to an unrifled amount of speculation from news sources involving gambling and James’ paternity suit. Did he really fake his death? And what about the mysterious light that kept flickering in the Jordans’ $60o,000 estate?

According to an article from Cox News Service on October 1994, it was noted that at the Jordans’ old house, which was on sale in 1994, the lights flickered every night. What’s more, some neighbors claimed that it stayed on for a few hours. The story was bizarre and it came around the time James’ disappearance was met with even more skepticism.
Was he hiding? What were the reasons behind it? And why was this particular incident met with such media attention?
Michael Jordan’s dad disappeared mysteriously in 1994
The real reason behind his disappearance is still a bit of a mystery. But during the crisis, James and Deloris’ neighbor, Jimmy Duncan noticed that the lights in the grey house were occasionally lit.
The bizarre nature came due to the fact that the house had been put up on sale for $600,000 and Deloris had already moved out following her husband’s disappearance in 1993.
Speaking to Cox News Service, Jimmy said, “We joke about it and say that when real estate agents show the house, they call Jordan and give him time to hide,”.
During the case surrounding James Jordan, the prosecutors vehemently rejected these claims. The notion that he could be alive was quickly dismissed by everyone, including the family and the people in the know.
However, the problem with these rumors, unfounded or not, was that they put a heavy toll on Michael.

The case was long and windy and it involved a gruesome murder. Moreover, the media hounded Michael and his family for answers. All of these factors influenced MJ enough to quit.
The unnerving fact that he had just accomplished his life-long goals only to find out his father had been brutally murdered was enough for Jordan to hang up his shoes. Couple that with the relentless media pressure surrounding the story, it was a bad scenario.
It took Michael less than 2 years to return to the game of basketball. But even in his triumphant return, his dear father was no longer by his side.
