In ‘Becoming Earnhardt’ Dale Jr. takes fans through all of the races, anecdotes, and stories from the first season that Dale Earnhardt took the track. In a recent episode of his podcast, Junior opened up on the idea behind the series and the exact foundation of it.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. reveals how ‘Becoming Earnhardt’ was possible

Speaking ahead of the release of the first episode of the series, an emotional Dale Jr. said, “This entire idea came from two scrapbooks that my Aunt Kaye put together back in 1979. Dad’s first full year, she decides ‘I’m going to start a scrapbook Dale, and when I see an article of yours in the local paper I’m going to cut it out and put it in here’. Articles that he wrote, I’ll read them to you man, and I’m hearing him talk. It’s in his cadence, the choice of words, I can hear him saying all of those things, right?”

“I know that he had Joe Whitlock and a couple of friends that were journalists that would help him, that probably even told him, ‘Hey man, this is a good idea, let’s do this. Let’s do this bi-monthly article, you’re a rookie, let’s get your name out there. Let’s let the fans understand who you are’. So, for the next couple of weeks we’re going to be dropping an episode.”

Becoming Earnhardt’s trailer proves why the series is special for Dale Jr.

The trailer was released on Dirty Mo Media’s official Youtube channel and features a montage of pictures from that time period featuring Dale Earnhardt and his contemporaries. Junior narrates, “I’m looking back on my dad’s rookie season before he was ‘The Intimidator’, and I’m uncovering details that I didn’t even know and this happens to be the greatest NASCAR season in history.”

The last part of what the two-time Daytona 500 winner says is what makes the series a highly-anticipated one. Aside from Earnhardt’s debut, the 1979 season contained other legends like Richard Petty, Darrell Waltrip, Bobby Allison, and Cale Yarborough at the peak of their powers. The production is sure to provide the NASCAR world and fans with many uncovered stories from the Golden Age of NASCAR.
