How does the NBA Draft lottery work?
The overall lottery process in the NBA saw a transformation in 2019. The event mainly involves the 14 teams that have failed to qualify for the Playoffs this season. The main change was to select the top four teams by drawing ping pong balls in the lottery machine.
Basically, fourteen balls are selected and kept in the lottery machine and four of them are drawn randomly at a time. The balls are generally placed in the machine for 20 seconds to randomize before the first ball is drawn. From the second ball onwards the sequence changes to only 10 seconds.
The event is usually organised in an hour long show on ESPN where the lottery is announced in reverse order. There are auditing companies to see that all processes are going on smoothly or not.
Representatives from each of the fourteen NBA franchises also remain present at the NBA Lottery event. The drawing of the ping pong balls are held in private in the presence of auditors and team representatives. While the audience gets to see the results of the lottery in a televised unveiling.
