Brian Scalabrine is an absolute legend. There is absolutely no question about it. The man was able to play a whopping 11 years in the league and averaged a monster of 3.1 points, 2.0 rebounds, and 0.8 assists over the course of his illustrious career.

And of course, who can forget his ultra-efficient 39% from the field, and 34.4% from beyond the arc?

All jokes aside, sure he may not have been the greatest player of all time, but he managed to do most can only dream of… make the NBA in the first place. And he was there for over a decade.

Now, throughout that time, there have been several iconic moments for fans throughout his career. But unequivocally, the most iconic is the moniker ‘the White Mamba’.

And in a recent podcast appearance with Brian, Kevin Garnett got him to reveal the true origin story behind this legendary nickname.

Yes, it is indeed very surprising that the name White Mamba doesn’t come from Scalabrine’s deadly nature. But it’s true.

No, as the Celtics fan favorite revealed to Kevin Garnett, it was all due to how he chose to customize the sneakers he played in during his career.

Now, this story absolutely is a legendary one. But of course, if Kobe Bryant had approved of it, there probably wouldn’t be many things on the planet that would fill fans with more joy.

Alas, it just didn’t break that way.

NBA fans can be very critical of even the greatest superstars the league has ever seen. So, when they saw Brian Scalabrine, of course, there were many who went overboard with it.

Well, at a point after his retirement from the NBA, Scalabrine finally grew sick of it.

So, he asked for challengers, and then chose the absolute best of the best out of all the candidates that dared to challenge him.
