“Comparing Patrick Mahomes to LeBron James was disrespectful”: Super Bowl narrative saying that Chiefs superstar was the LeBron James to Tom Brady’s Michael Jordan wasn’t received well
Fans online say that comparing Patrick Mahomes to LeBron James ahead of this year’s Super Bowl is disrespectful to the Lakers MVP.
Ahead of Super Bowl Sunday, Dallas Cowboys legend Tony Romo used his platform on CBS to share an interesting analogy for the when Tom Brady meets Patrick Mahomes. Romo said that Patrick Mahomes squaring off against Tom Brady in the Super Bowl is like LeBron James facing off against Michael Jordan in the NBA Finals.
This take wasn’t received all too well online when it was released about a week ago. However, following the Kansas City Chiefs’ loss to the Tampa Buccaneers this Sunday, many claim that this take is beyond disrespectful to LeBron James and his legacy.
Does the comparison between LeBron James and Patrick Mahomes hold any validity to it?
Patrick Mahomes is a superstar in his own right. He led his Chiefs to his first championship in merely his second season, while also being named the NFL’s MVP in his rookie season, before turning 25. Mahomes definitely has the potential to be present in every single Super Bowl that takes place for the next 10 years.
However, comparing a 24-year-old with one ring and one MVP to LeBron James doesn’t sit well with many NBA and NFL fans alike. LeBron is currently in the conversation for being the greatest of all time, after having won 4 championships, 4 Finals MVPs, 4 MVPs, and earning countless All-NBA and All-Star nods.
A fairer comparison between the two would’ve been comparing a much younger version of LeBron James to the current iteration of Patrick Mahomes. With this being said, this doesn’t take anything away from Mahomes’s potential to be the greatest ever in the NFL. This Super Bowl loss was anything but Pat’s fault as it was his offensive line that did not deliver last night.
On the flip side, the comparison between Michael Jordan and Tom Brady is pretty much spot on considering the fact that they are both universally regarded as the ‘GOAT’ in their respective sports.
